Inspiration and Motivation*

Why am I recommending inspirational and motivational books on an educational website? The short explanation is that educators are as much in need a bit of inspiration as anyone else! Read my full explanation at the bottom of this page, or just jump in and select a book!.

Chicken Soup for the Soul -
Living Your Dreams

By Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen

I'm in the middle of reading this book, but it only took a few pages for me to know that it's going to be one of my favorites! The first few chapters clearly outline how to figure out what you want out of life and to set goals for yourself. The authors include practical steps and strategies for achieving those goals, starting with believing in yourself and your "core genius." The remainder of the book is filled with inspirational stories of people who made their dreams come true. It's a great place to start if you have dreams and visions for the future but aren't sure how to make them happen.

* Last summer I noticed an article in the local newspaper about a book called The Secret. I was fascinated by what I read, and I wanted to know more. I immediately ordered a copy from Amazon, and when it arrived I devoured it! I have to say that reading this little book was a life-changing experience for me. I don't agree with everything in the book, but it opened me up to a new way of thinking and caused me to examine many of my own beliefs. The basic philosophy behind The Secret (and many of the other books on this list) is the "law of attraction" which says that "like attracts like." When you focus your energy on something, you attract more of that thing into your life. If you are positive and expect the best, you attract wonderful experiences into your life. If you are negative and complain, you continue to attract negative experiences - a self-fulfilling prophecy. The best part of learning about the Law of Attraction is realizing the truth of the saying, "If you can dream it, you can do it." Over the last year I have read all of the books above, and I wanted to share them with you because they truly have made a difference in my life. I've also been enjoying the Yoga for Beginners DVD. They are all powerful and inspirational in their own ways. None of them advocate a particular religion, but most of them acknowledge the spiritual, non-physical, realm. If you prefer a more practical approach, try the Law of Attraction by Michael Losier or Chicken Soup for the Soul - Living Your Dreams. Get ready to experience some amazing transformations in your life!
